“How does it sound, Auggie?” said the ear doctor. “Can you hear me okay, buddy?”

I looked at him and smiled but I didn’t answer. “Sweetie, do you hear anything different?” said Mom.
나는 선생님을 쳐다보며 미소 지었지만 대답은 하지 않았다. “우리 아들, 좀 다르게 들리니?” 엄마가 물으셨다.
“You don’t have to shout, Mom.” I nodded happily. “Are you hearing better?” asked the ear doctor.
“엄마, 그렇게 크게 말씀 안 하셔도 돼요.” 나는 기뻐하며 고개를 끄덕였다. “좀 더 잘 들리니?” 전문의 선생님이 물으셨다.
“I don’t hear that noise anymore,” I answered. “It’s so quiet in my ears.”
“더 이상 그 소음이 안 들려요.” 내가 대답했다. “귀 안이 정말 조용해요.”
“The white noise is gone,” he said, nodding. He looked at me and winked.
“백색 소음이 사라진 거란다.” 선생님이 고개를 끄덕이며 말씀하셨다. 선생님은 나를 보며 윙크를 하셨다.
white noise(백색 소음)는 모든 주파수 대역에서 일정한 소리를 내는 소음을 말합니다. 여기서는 보청기를 사용하기 전 어거스트를 답답하게 했던 머릿속의 웅웅거리는 소리를 뜻합니다.
“I told you you’d like what you heard, August.” He made more adjustments on the left hearing aid.
“거봐, 마음에 들 거라고 했지, 어거스트.” 선생님은 왼쪽 보청기를 좀 더 세밀하게 조절하셨다.
“Does it sound very different, love?” Mom asked. “Yeah.” I nodded. “It sounds... lighter.”
“소리가 많이 다르니, 얘야?” 엄마가 물으셨다. “네.” 내가 고개를 끄덕였다. “소리가... 더 가벼워요.”
“That’s because you have bionic hearing now, buddy,” said the ear doctor, adjusting the right side.
“이제 생체 공학적인 청력을 갖게 돼서 그런 거란다, 얘야.” 오른쪽 보청기를 조절하며 선생님이 말씀하셨다.
bionic(생체 공학적인)은 생명체의 기능을 모방한 기계 장치를 뜻합니다. 선생님은 Lobot(로봇) 캐릭터를 언급했던 어거스트의 눈높이에 맞춰 재치 있게 설명해 주시네요.
“Now touch here.” He put my hand behind the hearing aid. “Do you feel that? That’s the volume.
“자, 여기를 만져 보렴.” 선생님이 내 손을 보청기 뒤쪽으로 가져가셨다. “느껴지니? 이게 볼륨 조절기란다.”
You have to find the volume that works for you. We’re going to do that next. Well, what do you think?”
“너한테 딱 맞는 음량을 찾아야 해. 이제 그걸 해볼 거다. 자, 어떤 것 같니?”
He picked up a small mirror and had me look in the big mirror at how the hearing aids looked in the back.
선생님은 작은 거울을 들어 올려, 내가 큰 거울을 통해 보청기 뒷모습이 어떻게 보이는지 확인하게 하셨다.
