“I mean, let’s face it, his face is a little scary, right?” “I guess,” I answer.
“솔직히 말해서, 어거스트 얼굴이 좀 무섭긴 하잖아, 그치?” “그럴지도.” 내가 대답한다.
“But you’re okay with it?” she asks me sweetly. “You’re not too freaked out? Or scared?”
“하지만 넌 정말 괜찮아?” 그녀가 다정하게 묻는다. “너무 놀라거나 겁나지는 않아?”
“I’m not freaked out or scared.” I smile.
“전혀 놀라지도 않았고 겁나지도 않아.” 내가 미소 짓는다.
She nods and looks down at the polar bear on her lap.
그녀는 고개를 끄덕이며 무릎 위의 북극곰 인형을 내려다본다.
I can’t tell whether she believes me or not, but then she gives the polar bear a kiss on the nose and tosses it to me with a little smile.
그녀가 내 말을 믿는지 안 믿는지는 알 수 없지만, 그녀는 북극곰의 코에 뽀뽀하더니 살짝 미소를 지으며 인형을 나에게 던진다.
I think that means she believes me. Or at least that she wants to.
내 말을 믿는다는 뜻인 것 같다. 적어도 믿고 싶어 한다는 뜻이겠지.

나는 밸런타인데이 선물로 올리비아에게 하트 목걸이를 주었고, 그녀는 나에게 낡은 플로피 디스크로 직접 만든 메신저 백을 선물했다.
floppy disks(플로피 디스크)는 CD나 USB 메모리가 대중화되기 전에 사용하던 사각형 모양의 저장 매체입니다. 지금은 박물관에서나 볼 법한 물건을 재활용해 가방을 만든 비아의 독특한 감각이 돋보입니다.
Very cool how she makes things like that. Earrings out of pieces of circuit boards. Dresses out of T-shirts. Bags out of old jeans.
그런 물건들을 만들어 내는 그녀의 솜씨는 정말 대단하다. 회로 기판 조각으로 만든 귀걸이, 티셔츠로 만든 드레스, 낡은 청바지로 만든 가방 같은 것들 말이다.
She’s so creative. I tell her she should be an artist someday, but she wants to be a scientist.

We make plans for me to finally meet her parents. A Mexican restaurant on Amesfort Avenue near her house on Saturday night.
