You heard about the Photoshopping, right?” “Yeah, that was just sick.”
“너도 포토샵 이야기 들었지?” “응, 진짜 역겹더라.”
“Totally,” she answered, nodding. “Anyway, I better go. I just wanted you to know what was up and stuff.”
“내 말이.” 샬롯이 고개를 끄덕이며 대답했다. “어쨌든 난 이제 가야겠다. 그냥 어떻게 된 일인지 알려주고 싶었어.”
“Thanks, Charlotte.” “I’ll let you know if I hear anything else,” she said.
“고마워, 샬롯.” “또 다른 소식 들리면 알려줄게.” 샬롯이 말했다.
Before she went out, she looked left and right outside the door to make sure no one saw her leaving.
교실을 나가기 전, 샬롯은 문밖으로 고개를 내밀어 좌우를 살피며 자기가 나가는 걸 누가 보지는 않는지 확인했다.
I guess even though she was neutral, she didn’t want to be seen with me.
중립이라고는 해도, 나랑 같이 있는 모습을 들키고 싶지는 않았던 모양이다.

The next day at lunch, stupid me, I sat down at a table with Tristan, Nino, and Pablo.
다음 날 점심시간, 멍청하게도 나는 트리스탄, 니노, 파블로가 있는 테이블에 가서 앉았다.
I thought maybe they were safe because they weren’t really considered popular, but they weren’t out there playing D&D at recess, either.
그 애들은 딱히 인기 그룹도 아니었고, 그렇다고 쉬는 시간에 ‘던전 앤 드래곤’ 게임을 할 정도로 엉뚱한 부류도 아니었기에 안전할 거라고 생각했다.
They were sort of in-betweeners. And, at first, I thought I scored
말하자면 어중간한 부류였다. 처음에는 나름 성공했다고 생각했다.
in-betweeners는 학교 내 권력 구조에서 인기 그룹에 속하지는 않지만 그렇다고 아주 소외되지도 않은, 중간 부류의 아이들을 의미합니다.
because they were basically too nice to not acknowledge my presence when I walked over to the table.
내가 테이블로 다가갔을 때 무시하기엔 그 애들이 기본적으로 너무 착했기 때문이다.
They all said “Hey,” though I could tell they looked at each other.
그 애들은 서로 눈짓을 주고받으면서도 일단 나에게 “안녕.” 하고 인사를 건넸다.
