Daisy(데이지)는 앞서 1부에서도 등장했던 어거스트네 가족의 사랑스러운 반려견입니다.
“Cute card, huh?” I said to Mom, who had hardly said a word to me all the way home.
“카드 귀엽죠, 그쵸?” 집에 오는 내내 한마디도 안 하신 엄마에게 내가 말을 건넸다.
I think she honestly just didn't know what to say. “That must be their dog,” I said.
엄마는 정말이지 무슨 말을 해야 할지 모르시는 것 같았다. “이게 어거스트네 개인가 봐요.” 내가 덧붙였다.
“Do you want to tell me what's going on inside your head, Jack?” she answered me seriously.
“잭, 지금 무슨 생각을 하고 있는지 엄마한테 말해 줄래?” 엄마가 진지하게 물으셨다.
“I bet you they put a picture of their dog on the card every year,” I said.
“분명히 카드에 매년 자기네 강아지 사진을 넣을 거예요.” 내가 말했다.
She took the card from my hands and looked at the picture carefully. Then she raised her eyebrows and her shoulders and gave me back the card.
엄마는 내 손에서 카드를 가져가 사진을 꼼꼼히 살펴보셨다. 그러더니 눈썹을 치켜올리고 어깨를 으쓱하고는 카드를 다시 나에게 돌려주셨다.
“We're very lucky, Jack. There's so much we take for granted...”
“우린 참 운이 좋은 거야, 잭. 우리가 당연하게 여기는 것들이 너무나 많구나...”
“I know,” I said. I knew what she was talking about without her having to say it.
“알아요.” 내가 대답했다. 엄마가 굳이 설명하지 않아도 무슨 말씀을 하시는 건지 알 수 있었다.
“I heard that Julian's mom actually Photoshopped August's face out of the class picture when she got it.
“줄리안 엄마가 학급 사진을 받았을 때, 포토샵으로 어거스트 얼굴을 지워 버렸대요.”
Photoshopped(포토샵으로 편집하다)은 이미지 편집 프로그램을 사용하여 사진을 수정하는 행위를 말합니다. 줄리안의 엄마가 어거스트를 학급 구성원에서 인위적으로 배제하려 한 이 행동은 어른들의 편견이 얼마나 잔인할 수 있는지 보여줍니다.
She gave a copy to a couple of the other moms.” “That's just awful,” said Mom.

“People are just... they're not always so great.” “I know.” “Is that why you hit Julian?” “No.”
