August and I took our moms around together. We stopped at each exhibit, explaining what it was, talking in whispers, answering questions.
어거스트와 나는 우리 엄마들을 함께 모시고 다녔다. 전시물마다 멈춰 서서 그게 무엇인지 설명해 주고, 귓속말로 속삭이며 질문에 답하기도 했다.
Since it was dark, we used our flashlights to illuminate the artifacts while we were talking.
어두웠기 때문에 우리는 설명을 하는 동안 손전등으로 유물을 비추었다.
Sometimes, for dramatic effect, we would hold the flashlights under our chins while we were explaining something in detail.
가끔은 극적인 효과를 내기 위해 자세한 설명을 덧붙이면서 손전등을 턱 밑에 갖다 대기도 했다.
It was so much fun, hearing all these whispers in the dark, seeing all the lights zigzagging around the dark room.
어둠 속에서 들려오는 수많은 속삭임과 지그재그로 움직이는 불빛들을 지켜보는 건 정말 즐거운 일이었다.
At one point, I went over to get a drink at the water fountain. I had to take the mummy wrap off my face.
한번은 목을 축이러 식수대에 갔다. 그러려면 얼굴을 감싼 미라 붕대를 풀어야만 했다.
“Hey, Summer,” said Jack, who came over to talk to me. He was dressed like the man from The Mummy.
“안녕, 썸머.” 잭이 나에게 말을 걸러 다가왔다. 잭은 영화 『미라』에 나오는 남자 같은 복장을 하고 있었다.
영화 『미라』(The Mummy)의 주인공인 릭 오코넬처럼 탐험가 복장을 하고 나타났나 봅니다.
“Cool costume.” “Thanks.” “Is the other mummy August?”
“코스튬 멋진데.” “고마워.” “저기 다른 미라는 어거스트야?”
“Yeah.” “Um... hey, do you know why August is mad at me?”
“응.” “저기... 있잖아, 어거스트가 나한테 왜 화가 났는지 알아?”
“Uh-huh.” I nodded. “Can you tell me?” “No.”
“응.” 내가 고개를 끄덕였다. “말해 줄 수 있어?” “아니.”
He nodded. He seemed bummed. “I told him I wouldn’t tell you,” I explained.
잭은 고개를 끄덕였다. 실망한 기색이 역력했다. “어기한테 말하지 않겠다고 약속했거든.” 내가 설명했다.
“It’s so weird,” he said. “I have no idea why he’s mad at me all of a sudden. None. Can’t you at least give me a hint?”
“정말 이상해.” 그가 말했다. “갑자기 왜 저러는지 도통 모르겠어. 전혀. 힌트라도 좀 주면 안 돼?”
I looked over at where August was across the room, talking to our moms.
나는 방 건너편에서 우리 엄마들과 이야기를 나누고 있는 어거스트를 쳐다보았다.
