He shrugged. “Not really. I mean, I guess they go to heaven? That’s where my Grans went.”
녀석은 어깨를 으쓱했다. “그다지. 내 말은, 천국에 가지 않을까? 우리 할머니도 거기로 가셨거든.”
“I think about it a lot,” I said. “I think when people die, their souls go to heaven but just for a little while.
“난 그 생각을 자주 해.” 내가 말했다. “사람이 죽으면 영혼이 천국에 가긴 하는데, 아주 잠깐 동안만 머무는 것 같아.”

“Their souls get a chance to have a do-over.” He thought about what I was saying and then nodded.
“다시 시작할 기회를 얻는 셈이지.” 녀석은 내 말을 곰곰이 생각하더니 고개를 끄덕였다.
“Kind of like when you get a makeup test,” he said. “Right.”
“재시험 같은 거네.” 녀석이 말했다. “맞아.”
makeup test는 결석이나 낙제 등으로 인해 다시 치르는 재시험이나 보충 시험을 뜻합니다. 어거스트는 환생이라는 심오한 개념을 학생답게 학교 생활에 빗대어 표현하고 있군요.
“But they don’t come back looking the same,” he said. “I mean, they look completely different when they come back, right?”

“Oh yeah,” I answered. “Your soul stays the same but everything else is different.”
“그럼.” 내가 대답했다. “영혼은 그대로지만 나머지는 전부 달라지는 거야.”
