Asher whimpered, cringed, and corrected himself instantly. “Snack,” he whispered.

결국 애셔가 세 살이었을 때, 한동안은 아예 말을 하지 않기도 했다.
“For a while,” the Chief Elder said, relating the story, “we had a silent Asher! But he learned.”
“한동안은,” 수석 원로가 이야기를 들려주었다. “말 없는 애셔였지요! 하지만 그는 배웠습니다.”
She turned to him with a smile. “When he began to talk again, it was with greater precision.
그녀는 미소를 지으며 애셔를 돌아보았다. “다시 말을 시작했을 때는 훨씬 더 정확해졌지요.”
And now his lapses are very few. His corrections and apologies are very prompt. And his good humor is unfailing.”
“이제 애셔가 말을 실수하는 일은 거의 없습니다. 잘못을 바로잡고 사과하는 것도 매우 빠르지요. 게다가 변치 않는 유머 감각도 갖추고 있습니다.”
The audience murmured in agreement. Asher’s cheerful disposition was well-known throughout the community.
청중들 사이에서 동의하는 웅성거림이 일었다. 애셔의 쾌활한 성격은 공동체 전체에 잘 알려져 있었다.
“Asher.” She lifted her voice to make the official announcement. “We have given you the Assignment of Assistant Director of Recreation.”
“애셔.” 그녀가 공식 발표를 위해 목소리를 높였다. “우리는 당신에게 ‘여가 활동 부감독관’ 직위를 배정했습니다.”
여가 활동 부감독관(Assistant Director of Recreation)은 에셔의 활달하고 장난기 많은 기질을 공동체의 즐거움을 위해 활용하도록 배정한 전략적인 직위라고 볼 수 있군요.
She clipped on his new badge as he stood beside her, beaming. Then he turned and left the stage as the audience cheered.
그녀는 옆에서 환하게 웃고 있는 애셔의 가슴에 새 배지를 달아주었다. 애셔는 몸을 돌려 청중의 환호를 받으며 무대에서 내려왔다.
When he had taken his seat again, the Chief Elder looked down at him and said the words
