Asher grinned and scratched one leg with the other foot. The audience chuckled softly.
애셔가 히죽 웃으며 한쪽 발로 반대쪽 다리를 긁적거리자, 청중석에서 가벼운 웃음소리가 새어 나왔다.
“When the committee began to consider Asher’s Assignment,” she went on, “there were some possibilities that were immediately discarded.
“위원회에서 애셔의 직위를 검토하기 시작했을 때,” 그녀가 말을 이었다. “곧바로 제외된 몇 가지 가능성이 있었습니다.”
Some that would clearly not have been right for Asher. “For example,” she said, smiling,
“누가 봐도 애셔에게는 어울리지 않는 일들이었지요. 예를 들면,” 그녀가 미소를 지으며 말했다.
“we did not consider for an instant designating Asher an Instructor of Threes.”
“우리는 애셔를 3살 아이들을 가르치는 교사로 임명하는 것을 단 한 순간도 고려하지 않았습니다.”
The audience howled with laughter. Asher laughed, too, looking sheepish but pleased at the special attention.
강당은 폭소로 가득 찼다. 애셔도 쑥스러운 표정을 지으면서도 자신에게 쏟아지는 특별한 관심이 즐거운지 함께 웃었다.
The Instructors of Threes were in charge of the acquisition of correct language.
3살 아이들의 교사는 아이들이 정확한 언어를 습득하는 과정을 책임지는 자리였다.
이 공동체에서는 정확한 언어 사용(Precision of Language)을 최고의 가치 중 하나로 여깁니다. 3살 아이들의 교육을 담당하는 교사가 언어 습득을 책임지는 이유이기도 하죠.
“In fact,” the Chief Elder continued, chuckling a little herself,
“사실,” 수석 원로도 조금 낄낄거리며 말을 이어갔다.
“we even gave a little thought to some retroactive chastisement for the one who had been Asher’s Instructor of Threes so long ago.
“우리는 아주 오래전 애셔를 가르쳤던 3살 교사에게 소급해서 벌을 주어야 하는 게 아닌가 생각하기도 했답니다.”
At the meeting where Asher was discussed, we retold many of the stories that we all remembered from his days of language acquisition.
“애셔에 대해 논의하던 회의에서, 우리는 그가 말을 배우던 시절의 수많은 일화를 떠올리며 이야기를 나누었지요.”
“Especially,” she said, chuckling, “the difference between snack and smack. Remember, Asher?”
“특히나 ‘snack(간식)’과 ‘smack(매)’의 차이에 얽힌 일화 말입니다. 기억나나요, 애셔?”
애셔의 유명한 말실수 일화가 시작되는 대목입니다. 발음이 비슷한 두 단어의 혼동이 이 공동체에서는 단순한 해프닝 이상의 의미를 지닙니다.
Asher nodded ruefully, and the audience laughed aloud. Jonas did, too.
애셔가 후회 섞인 미소를 띠며 고개를 끄덕이자 사람들은 크게 웃음을 터뜨렸다. 조너스도 같이 웃었다.
He remembered, though he had been only a Three at the time himself.
