찬가가 끝나고 학생들이 자리에 앉자, 애셔는 정해진 규칙에 따라 공개 사과를 하기 위해 그대로 서 있었다.
잘못을 저질렀을 때 학급 친구들 앞에서 정해진 문구로 사과하는 공개 사과(Public Apology) 절차입니다. 이 공동체에서는 모든 행동이 이처럼 규격화된 절차를 따릅니다.
“I apologize for inconveniencing my learning community.” Asher ran through the standard apology phrase rapidly, still catching his breath.
“학습 공동체에 불편을 끼쳐 드려 죄송합니다.” 애셔는 아직 숨이 덜 찼는지 가쁘게 몰아쉬면서도 정해진 사과 문구를 빠르게 읊었다.
The Instructor and class waited patiently for his explanation. The students had all been grinning,

because they had listened to Asher’s explanations so many times before.
예전에도 애셔의 사과를 워낙 많이 들었기 때문이었다.
“I left home at the correct time but when I was riding along near the hatchery, the crew was separating some salmon.
“제시간에 집에서 나왔는데, 부화장 근처를 지날 때 요원들이 연어를 분류하고 있었거든요.”
I guess I just got distraught, watching them. I apologize to my classmates,” Asher concluded.
“그걸 보다가 저도 모르게 넋이 나갔나 봐요. 반 친구들에게 사과합니다.” 애셔가 말을 맺었다.
He smoothed his rumpled tunic and sat down. “We accept your apology, Asher.” The class recited the standard response in unison.
애셔는 구겨진 겉옷을 매만지며 자리에 앉았다. “애셔, 네 사과를 받아줄게.” 반 친구들이 일제히 약속된 답변을 읊었다.
사과를 받은 사람들이 다 같이 한목소리로 답하는 표준 답변(Standard Response)입니다. 사과와 수용이 개인적인 감정보다는 사회적 의무로서 행해지고 있음을 보여줍니다.
Many of the students were biting their lips to keep from laughing. “I accept your apology, Asher,” the Instructor said. He was smiling.
많은 학생이 웃음을 참으려 입술을 깨물었다. “애셔, 사과를 받아줄게요.” 선생님이 미소를 지으며 말했다.
“And I thank you, because once again you have provided an opportunity for a lesson in language.
“그리고 고마워요. 덕분에 다시 한번 언어 교육의 기회를 갖게 되었으니까요.”
‘Distraught’ is too strong an adjective to describe salmon-viewing.”
“‘넋이 나가다’라는 표현은 연어를 구경하는 상황을 묘사하기엔 너무 강한 형용사예요.”
distraught(넋이 나간)와 distracted(주의가 산만한)의 미묘한 어감 차이를 지적하고 있습니다. 아주 사소한 단어의 오용도 그냥 넘어가지 않는 철저한 교육 방식이 돋보입니다.
