“My friend Yoshiko was surprised by her selection as Doctor,” Father said, “but she was thrilled.

He spent all the recreation time he could with his construction set, and his volunteer hours were always on building sites.
“그 친구는 자유 시간을 온통 조립 세트로 무언가를 만드는 데 보냈고, 봉사 시간도 언제나 건설 현장에서 보냈지.”
The Elders knew that, of course. Andrei was given the Assignment of Engineer and he was delighted.”
“원로들께서도 당연히 관찰을 통해 그 사실을 알고 계셨어. 안드레이는 기술자 직위를 받았고 아주 즐거워했단다.”
“Andrei later designed the bridge that crosses the river to the west of town,” Jonas’s mother said. “It wasn’t there when we were children.”
“나중에 안드레이가 마을 서쪽 강을 가로지르는 다리를 설계했지요.” 조너스의 어머니가 말했다. “우리가 어렸을 때는 없던 다리였고요.”
“There are very rarely disappointments, Jonas. I don’t think you need to worry about that,” his father reassured him.
“조너스, 실망하는 경우는 아주 드물단다. 그 점은 걱정할 필요 없다고 생각해.” 아버지가 그를 안심시켰다.
“And if there are, you know there’s an appeal process.” But they all laughed at that—an appeal went to a committee for study.
“만약 실망하게 되더라도, 이의 신청 절차가 있다는 걸 너도 알잖니.” 하지만 그 말에 모두가 웃음을 터뜨렸다. 이의 신청이란 검토를 위해 위원회로 넘어가는 것을 의미했기 때문이다.
이의 신청(Appeal) 절차를 언급하자 온 가족이 웃음을 터뜨리는 이유는, 위원회의 검토가 워낙 느리고 보수적이어서 사실상 결과가 바뀌는 일이 거의 없기 때문입니다. 일종의 허울뿐인 제도라는 점을 비판적인 유머로 표현한 대목입니다.
“I worry a little about Asher’s Assignment,” Jonas confessed. “Asher’s such fun.
“전 애셔의 직위가 조금 걱정돼요.” 조너스가 털어놓았다. “애셔는 정말 재밌는 친구거든요.”
But he doesn’t really have any serious interests. He makes a game out of everything.”
“하지만 딱히 진지하게 관심을 두는 분야가 없어요. 모든 걸 다 장난으로만 생각하거든요.”
His father chuckled. “You know,” he said, “I remember when Asher was a newchild at the Nurturing Center, before he was named.
아버지가 껄껄 웃었다. “있잖니, 애셔가 이름을 받기 전 보육 센터에 신생아로 있었을 때가 기억나는구나.”
He never cried. He giggled and laughed at everything. All of us on the staff enjoyed nurturing Asher.”
“그 애는 절대 울지 않았어. 모든 일에 낄낄대며 웃었지. 우리 보육사들 모두 애셔를 돌보는 걸 즐거워했단다.”
“The Elders know Asher,” his mother said. “They’ll find exactly the right Assignment for him.
“원로들께서도 애셔를 잘 알고 계실 거야.” 어머니가 말했다. “그 아이에게 딱 맞는 직위를 찾아 주시겠지.”
