He could see pale carpeting on the floor. “It’s just an ordinary room,” he commented.

의례(Ceremony)라는 거창한 이름과 달리 너무나 평범한 방의 모습에 조너스는 의아함을 느낍니다.
“I thought maybe they’d have it in the Auditorium, so that everybody could come.
“전 모든 사람이 참석할 수 있게 강당에서 열릴 줄 알았거든요.”
All the Old go to Ceremonies of Release. But I suppose that when it’s just a newborn, they don’t—”
“노인들은 모두 임무 해제 의례에 참석하시잖아요. 하지만 갓 태어난 아기일 때는 그렇지 않은 모양이—”
“Shhh,” The Giver said, his eyes on the screen.
“쉿.” 화면에 시선을 고정한 채 기억을 주는 자가 말했다.
Jonas’s father, wearing his nurturing uniform, entered the room, cradling a tiny newchild wrapped in a soft blanket in his arms.
보육사 제복을 입은 조너스의 아버지가 부드러운 담요에 싸인 아주 작은 신생아를 품에 안고 방으로 들어왔다.
A uniformed woman followed through the door, carrying a second newchild wrapped in a similar blanket.
제복을 입은 한 여성이 비슷한 담요에 싸인 두 번째 신생아를 안고 뒤따라 들어왔다.
“That’s my father.” Jonas found himself whispering, as if he might wake the little ones if he spoke aloud.
“저분은 저희 아버지예요.” 조너스는 크게 말하면 아기들이 깨기라도 할 것처럼 어느새 속삭이고 있었다.
영상 속의 아기들이 깰까 봐 자기도 모르게 속삭이는 조너스의 모습에서, 그가 이 상황에 얼마나 몰입하고 있는지가 느껴집니다.
