“If you want to watch a release, you have simply to ask.” Jonas shrugged.
“임무 해제를 보고 싶다면 그저 요청하기만 하면 돼.” 조너스가 어깨를 으쓱했다.
“Well, maybe I will, then. But it’s too late for this one. I’m sure it was this morning.”
“음, 그럼 그럴게요. 하지만 이번 건 너무 늦었어요. 분명 오늘 아침에 끝났을 테니까요.”
The Giver told him, then, something he had not known. “All private ceremonies are recorded. They’re in the Hall of Closed Records.”
기억을 주는 자는 조너스가 모르던 사실을 알려주었다. “모든 사적인 의례는 녹화된단다. ‘비공개 기록 보관소’에 보관되어 있지.”
비공개 기록 보관소(Hall of Closed Records)는 공동체의 모든 사적이고 은밀한 기록물이 보관되는 장소입니다. 오직 전달자만이 가질 수 있는 전방위적인 정보 접근 권한이 드러납니다.
“Do you want to see this morning’s release?” Jonas hesitated.
“오늘 아침의 임무 해제 광경을 보고 싶니?” 조너스는 망설였다.
He was afraid that his father wouldn’t like it, if he watched something so private.
그렇게 사적인 장면을 훔쳐보는 걸 아버지가 싫어하실까 봐 걱정이 되었다.
“I think you should,” The Giver told him firmly. “All right, then,” Jonas said. “Tell me how.”
“보는 게 좋겠구나.” 기억을 주는 자가 단호하게 말했다. “알겠어요. 그럼 어떻게 하면 되나요?” 조너스가 물었다.
The Giver rose from his chair, went to the speaker on the wall, and clicked the switch from OFF to ON.
기억을 주는 자는 의자에서 일어나 벽에 달린 스피커로 다가가더니 스위치를 ‘꺼짐’에서 ‘켜짐’으로 돌렸다.
평소 안내 방송만 흘러나오던 스피커의 스위치를 직접 조작하는 행위는, 체제의 지시를 받는 입장에서 체제를 통제하는 위치로 바뀌는 상징적인 움직임입니다.
The voice spoke immediately. “Yes, Receiver. How may I help you?”
즉시 목소리가 들려왔다. “네, 전달자님. 무엇을 도와드릴까요?”
“I would like to see this morning’s release of the twin.” “One moment, Receiver. Thank you for your instructions.”
“오늘 아침에 있었던 쌍둥이 임무 해제 장면을 보고 싶소.” “잠시만 기다려 주십시오, 전달자님. 지시해 주셔서 감사합니다.”
Jonas watched the video screen above the row of switches. Its blank face began to flicker with zig-zag lines;
