“Instead of twenty-six letters. There are really fifty-two.”
“스물여섯 자가 아니라, 실제로는 쉰두 자라고.”
Stanley looked at him, surprised. “I guess that's right. How'd you figure that out?” he asked.
스탠리는 깜짝 놀라 그를 쳐다보았다. “듣고 보니 그렇네. 그걸 어떻게 계산했어?” 그가 물었다.
Zero said nothing. “Did you add?” Zero said nothing. “Did you multiply?”
제로는 아무 말이 없었다. “더한 거야?” 제로는 대답이 없었다. “곱한 거야?”
“That's just how many there are,” said Zero. Stanley raised and lowered one shoulder.
“그냥 글자 수가 원래 그렇잖아.” 제로가 말했다. 스탠리는 어깨를 한 번 으쓱했다.
He didn't even know how Zero knew there were twenty-six in the first place. Did he count them as he recited them?
애초에 제로가 알파벳이 스물여섯 자라는 걸 어떻게 알았는지조차 의문이었다. 아까 알파벳을 읊으면서 머릿속으로 숫자를 센 걸까?
He had Zero write a few more upper- and lowercase A's, and then he moved on to a capital B. This was going to take a long time, he realized.
그는 제로에게 대문자와 소문자 A를 몇 번 더 쓰게 한 다음 대문자 B로 넘어갔다. 갈 길이 멀다는 걸 그는 뼈저리게 느꼈다.
“You can teach me ten letters a day,” suggested Zero. “Five capitals and five smalls. After five days I'll know them all.”
“하루에 열 자씩 가르쳐줘.” 제로가 제안했다. “대문자 다섯 개랑 소문자 다섯 개씩. 그렇게 닷새면 다 배울 수 있어.”
“Except on the last day I'll have to do twelve. Six capitals and six smalls.”
“마지막 날에만 대문자 여섯 개랑 소문자 여섯 개, 열두 자를 하면 돼.”
Again Stanley stared at him, amazed that he was able to figure all that out.
스탠리는 그 모든 걸 순식간에 계산해낸 제로를 보고 다시금 감탄하며 쳐다보았다.
제로는 글을 모를 뿐, 수적인 감각이나 논리적인 사고력이 매우 뛰어나다는 것을 짐작할 수 있습니다.
Zero must have thought he was staring for a different reason, because he said, “I'll dig part of your hole every day.”
제로는 스탠리가 다른 이유로 자기를 쳐다본다고 생각했는지 이렇게 말했다. “매일 네 구덩이를 조금씩 대신 파줄게.”
“I can dig for about an hour, then you can teach me for an hour.”
“내가 한 시간 정도 대신 파주면, 너도 나를 한 시간 동안 가르쳐줄 수 있잖아.”
“And since I'm a faster digger anyway, our holes will get done about the same time. I won't have to wait for you.”
“어차피 내가 땅을 더 빨리 파니까, 우리 구덩이는 거의 동시에 끝날 거야. 그럼 내가 널 기다릴 필요도 없고.”
