“I guess he likes to dig holes,” Armpit had said. “He's a mole,” Zigzag had said.
“구덩이 파는 걸 좋아하나 보지.” 암핏이 말했다. “쟨 두더지야.” 지그재그가 말했다.
“I think he eats dirt.” “Moles don't eat dirt,” X-Ray had pointed out. “Worms eat dirt.”
“내 생각엔 흙도 먹는 것 같아.” “두더지는 흙 안 먹어.” 엑스레이가 짚어 주었다. “흙 먹는 건 지렁이지.”
“Hey, Zero?” Squid had asked. “Are you a mole or a worm?” Zero had said nothing.
“야, 제로. 넌 두더지냐, 지렁이냐?” 스퀴드가 물었지만 제로는 아무 말도 없었다.
Stanley never even thanked him. But now he sat on his cot and waited for Zero to return from the shower room.

“Thanks,” he said as Zero entered through the tent flap.

Zero glanced at him, then went over to the crates, where he deposited his dirty clothes and towel.
제로는 스탠리를 한 번 슥 쳐다보더니 나무 상자 쪽으로 가서 더러워진 옷과 수건을 넣어두었다.
“Why'd you help me?” Stanley asked. Zero turned around.
“왜 날 도와준 거야?” 스탠리가 물었다. 제로가 몸을 돌렸다.
“You didn't steal the sunflower seeds,” he said. “So, neither did you,” said Stanley.
“넌 해바라기 씨를 훔치지 않았잖아.” 제로가 말했다. “너도 안 훔쳤잖아.” 스탠리가 대꾸했다.
Zero stared at him. His eyes seemed to expand, and it was almost as if Zero were looking right through him.
제로는 스탠리를 빤히 바라보았다. 그의 눈동자가 커지는 듯하더니, 마치 스탠리의 속마음을 꿰뚫어 보는 것만 같았다.
“You didn't steal the sneakers,” he said. Stanley said nothing. He watched Zero walk out of the tent.
“넌 운동화도 안 훔쳤어.” 제로가 말했다. 스탠리는 아무 말도 할 수 없었다. 그는 제로가 텐트 밖으로 나가는 것을 지켜보았다.
