“What'd the Warden say?” asked X-Ray. “What'd you tell her?” asked Magnet.
“소장이 뭐래?” 엑스레이가 물었다. “뭐라고 말했어?” 마그넷도 물었다.
“I told her I stole the seeds,” said Stanley. “Good going,” said Magnet.
“내가 씨앗 훔쳤다고 말했어.” 스탠리가 대답했다. “잘했어.” 마그넷이 말했다.
“What'd she do?” asked Zigzag. Stanley shrugged one shoulder.
“그래서 소장이 어떻게 했는데?” 지그재그가 물었다. 스탠리는 어깨를 한 번 으쓱했다.
“Nothing. She got mad at Mr. Sir for bothering her.” He didn't feel like going into details.
“아무 일도 없었어. 그냥 자기를 귀찮게 했다고 미스터 써한테 화만 내더라고.” 그는 자세한 내용까지 말하고 싶지는 않았다.
If he didn't talk about it, then maybe it didn't happen. He went over to his hole, and to his surprise it was nearly finished.
말하지 않는다면 어쩌면 없었던 일이 될지도 몰랐다. 그는 자기 구덩이로 갔고, 놀랍게도 구덩이는 거의 다 파여 있었다.
He stared at it, amazed. It didn't make sense. Or perhaps it did.
그는 깜짝 놀라 구덩이를 빤히 쳐다보았다. 말도 안 되는 일이었다. 아니, 어쩌면 말이 될지도 몰랐다.
He smiled. Since he had taken the blame for the sunflower seeds, he realized, the other boys had dug his hole for him.
그는 미소를 지었다. 자기가 해바라기 씨 사건의 책임을 뒤집어쓴 덕분에 다른 아이들이 대신 구덩이를 파준 것이라는 사실을 깨달았다.
스탠리가 동료들을 대신해 독박(?)을 쓴 것에 대해, 소년들이 그들만의 방식인 대신 땅 파주기로 의리를 지킨 셈입니다.
“Hey, thanks,” he said. “Don't look at me,” said X-Ray. Confused, Stanley looked around— from Magnet, to Armpit, to Zigzag, to Squid.
“얘들아, 고마워.” 그가 말했다. “난 아니니까 쳐다보지도 마.” 엑스레이가 대꾸했다. 당황한 스탠리는 마그넷, 암핏, 지그재그, 그리고 스퀴드를 차례로 둘러보았다.
None of them took credit for it. Then he turned to Zero, who had been quietly digging in his hole since Stanley's return.
아무도 자기가 했다고 나서지 않았다. 그러다 그는 제로 쪽으로 고개를 돌렸다. 제로는 스탠리가 돌아온 뒤로 줄곧 자기 구덩이에서 묵묵히 땅을 파고 있었다.
Zero's hole was smaller than all the others. Stanley was the first one finished.
제로의 구덩이는 다른 누구의 것보다도 작았다. 스탠리는 오늘 1등으로 일을 마쳤다.
He spat in his hole, then showered and changed into his cleaner set of clothes.
그는 구덩이에 침을 뱉고 샤워를 한 뒤, 그나마 좀 더 깨끗한 옷으로 갈아입었다.
It had been three days since the laundry was done, so even his clean set was dirty and smelly.
세탁한 지 사흘이나 지났기 때문에 깨끗한 옷이라고 해봐야 지저분하고 냄새가 났다.
