스탠리는 부모님이 걱정하실까 봐 실제의 고된 강제 노동을 장애물 달리기나 장거리 수영 같은 평범한 캠프 활동으로 미화해서 적고 있습니다.
Tomorrow we learn...” He stopped writing as Zero walked into the tent, then returned to his letter.
내일은 저희가……” 제로가 텐트 안으로 들어오자 그는 쓰던 것을 멈추었다가, 다시 편지로 눈을 돌렸다.

The other boys... “I don’t know how,” said Zero.
다른 아이들은…… “난 할 줄 몰라.” 제로가 말했다.
“What?” “Can you teach me?” Stanley didn’t know what he was talking about.
“뭐라고?” “나 좀 가르쳐 줄래?” 스탠리는 그가 무슨 소리를 하는지 알아듣지 못했다.
“Teach you what, to rock climb?” Zero stared at him with penetrating eyes.
“뭘 가르쳐 달라는 거야, 암벽 등반?” 제로는 꿰뚫어 보는 듯한 눈빛으로 그를 빤히 쳐다보았다.
“What?” said Stanley. He was hot, tired, and sore. “I want to learn to read and write,” said Zero.
“왜 그래?” 스탠리가 물었다. 그는 덥고 지쳤으며 온몸이 쑤셨다. “읽고 쓰는 법을 배우고 싶어.” 제로가 말했다.
그동안 말수도 적고 감정 표현이 거의 없던 제로가 처음으로 스탠리에게 자신의 간절한 바람을 직접 털어놓는 대목입니다.
Stanley let out a short laugh. He wasn’t laughing at Zero. He was just surprised.
스탠리는 짧게 헛웃음을 터뜨렸다. 제로를 비웃으려던 게 아니라 그저 놀랐을 뿐이었다.
All this time he had thought Zero was reading over his shoulder. “Sorry,” he said. “I don’t know how to teach.”
지금까지 그는 제로가 자기 어깨너머로 편지를 훔쳐보는 줄로만 알았다. “미안해.” 그가 대답했다. “난 가르치는 법을 몰라.”
After digging all day, he didn’t have the strength to try to teach Zero to read and write. He needed to save his energy for the people who counted.
온종일 구덩이를 판 뒤라 제로에게 글을 가르쳐 줄 기운 따위는 남아 있지 않았다. 그는 자신에게 중요한 사람들을 위해 에너지를 아껴야 했다.
