As the days wore on, the Warden became less and less patient. She arrived later in the morning and left earlier in the afternoon.

Meanwhile, the boys continued to dig later and later.

At just that moment, Armpit was returning from a bathroom break. “How nice of you to join us,” she said. “And what have you been doing?”

“저기 그러니까…… 볼일 좀 보러 갔었는데요.” 소장은 갈퀴로 암핏을 툭 찔렀고, 암핏은 뒤로 넘어지며 거대한 구덩이 속으로 굴러떨어졌다.
pitchfork(갈퀴)는 원래 건초를 나를 때 쓰는 농기구입니다. 소장님은 이를 사용해 신체적인 폭력을 가하며 아이들을 위협하고 있습니다.
The pitchfork left three holes in the front of his shirt, and three tiny spots of blood.
암핏의 셔츠 앞자락에는 갈퀴 자국 세 개가 남았고, 핏방울 세 개가 작게 번져 나왔다.
“You’re giving these boys too much water,” the Warden told Mr. Pendanski.
“펜단스키, 당신이 애들한테 물을 너무 많이 주고 있어.” 소장이 펜단스키 선생님에게 쏘아붙였다.
They continued to dig until late afternoon, long after all the other groups had finished for the day.
