Instead of showing it to Zigzag, Stanley brought it to X-Ray. Zigzag followed.
스탠리는 그것을 지그재그에게 보여주는 대신 엑스레이에게 가져갔다. 지그재그가 그 뒤를 따라왔다.
X-Ray looked at the tube, then rubbed his dirty glasses on his dirty shirt and looked at the tube again.
엑스레이는 튜브를 보더니, 지저분한 셔츠에 지저분한 안경을 닦고는 다시 튜브를 쳐다보았다.
One by one, the other boys dropped their shovels and came to look.
다른 아이들도 하나둘씩 삽을 내려놓고 구경하러 몰려들었다.
“It looks like an old shotgun shell,” said Squid. “Yeah, that's probably what it is,” said Stanley.
“낡은 엽총 탄피처럼 생겼는데.” 스퀴드가 말했다. “응, 아마 그럴 거야.” 스탠리가 대답했다.
스퀴드는 이를 shotgun shell(엽총 탄피)이라고 짐작하는군요. 하지만 스탠리가 발견한 하트 문양과 이니셜을 아이들은 아직 눈치채지 못한 듯합니다.
He decided not to mention the engraved design. Maybe nobody would notice it. He doubted X-Ray could see it.
그는 새겨진 문양에 대해서는 말하지 않기로 했다. 어쩌면 아무도 눈치채지 못할지도 몰랐다. 엑스레이가 그것을 볼 수 있을지도 의문이었다.
“No, it's too long and thin to be a shotgun shell,” said Magnet.
“아니야, 엽총 탄피라고 하기엔 너무 길고 가늘어.” 마그넷이 말했다.
“It's prob'ly just a piece of junk,” said Stanley. “Well, I'll show it to Mom,” said X-Ray.
“그냥 쓰레기 조각일 거야.” 스탠리가 말했다. “글쎄, ‘엄마’한테 보여줘야겠어.” 엑스레이가 말했다.
“See what he thinks. Who knows? Maybe I'll get the day off.”
“그가 어떻게 생각하는지 보자고. 누가 알아? 어쩌면 오늘 하루 쉴 수 있을지.”
“Your hole's almost finished,” said Stanley. “Yeah, so?” Stanley raised and lowered his shoulder.
“네 구덩이는 거의 다 팠잖아.” 스탠리가 말했다. “그래, 그래서?” 엑스레이가 되물었다. 스탠리는 어깨를 한 번 으쓱했다.
“So, why don't you wait until tomorrow to show it to Mom?” he suggested.
“그러니까, ‘엄마’한테 보여주는 건 내일까지 기다리는 게 어때?” 그가 제안했다.
“You can pretend you found it first thing in the morning. Then you can get the whole day off, instead of just an hour or so this afternoon.”
“내일 아침 일찍 찾은 것처럼 꾸미는 거야. 그러면 오늘 오후 한두 시간 정도가 아니라, 내일 하루를 통째로 쉴 수 있잖아.”
