Mr. Pendanski filled each boy’s canteen, until Stanley was the only one left.
펜단스키 선생님은 아이들의 수통을 하나씩 채워 주었고, 마침내 스탠리만 남게 되었다.
“I found something,” Stanley said, taking it out of his pocket.
“저 뭐 좀 찾았어요.” 스탠리가 주머니에서 돌을 꺼내며 말했다.
Mr. Pendanski reached for Stanley’s canteen, but Stanley handed him the rock instead.
펜단스키 선생님이 스탠리의 수통을 받으려 손을 뻗었지만, 스탠리는 수통 대신 돌을 건넸다.
“What’s this?” “It’s a fossil,” said Stanley. “See the fish?”
“이게 뭐니?” “화석이에요.” 스탠리가 대답했다. “여기 물고기 보이세요?”
Mr. Pendanski looked at it again. “See, you can even see all of its little bones,” said Stanley.
펜단스키 선생님이 다시 한번 살펴보았다. “보세요, 작은 뼈마디까지 다 보여요.” 스탠리가 말했다.
“Interesting,” said Mr. Pendanski. “Let me have your canteen.” Stanley handed it to him.
“흥미롭구나.” 펜단스키 선생님이 말했다. “수통 이리 주렴.” 스탠리는 수통을 건넸다.
Mr. Pendanski filled it, then returned it. “So do I get the rest of the day off?”
펜단스키 선생님은 수통을 채워 다시 돌려주었다. “그럼 저 이제 남은 시간은 쉬어도 되나요?”
“What for?” “You know, you said if I found something interesting, the Warden would give me the day off.”
“뭐 때문에?” “아시잖아요, 흥미로운 걸 찾으면 소장님이 쉬게 해 주실 거라고 선생님이 말씀하셨잖아요.”
Mr. Pendanski laughed as he gave the fossil back to Stanley. “Sorry, Stanley. The Warden isn’t interested in fossils.”
펜단스키 선생님은 웃음을 터뜨리며 화석을 스탠리에게 돌려주었다. “미안하다, 스탠리. 소장님은 화석에는 관심이 없으시단다.”
겨우 찾아낸 화석이 거절당하자 스탠리의 실망감이 이만저만이 아닐 겁니다. 소장님이 찾는 건 학술적인 가치가 있는 화석이 아닌, 다른 어떤 것인 모양이군요.
“Let me see that,” said Magnet, taking the rock from Stanley.
“그것 좀 보자.” 마그넷이 스탠리에게서 돌을 뺏으며 말했다.
Stanley continued to stare at Mr. Pendanski. “Hey, Zig, dig this rock.” “Cool,” said Zigzag.
스탠리는 계속 펜단스키 선생님을 쳐다보았다. “야, 지그재그, 이 돌 좀 봐.” “끝내주는데.” 지그재그가 말했다.
Stanley saw his fossil being passed around. “I don’t see nothing,” said X-Ray.
스탠리는 자기 화석이 이 손 저 손으로 건너가는 것을 지켜보았다. “난 아무것도 안 보이는데.” 엑스레이가 말했다.
