“What’d you say?” the Lump demanded. “Nothin’,” said Stanley.
“방금 뭐라고 했냐?” 그 덩어리가 따져 물었다. “아무것도 아니야.” 스탠리가 대답했다.
The Lump rose. He was almost as big as Stanley and a lot tougher.
덩어리가 몸을 일으켰다. 그는 스탠리만큼이나 덩치가 컸고 훨씬 더 험상궂어 보였다.
“You said something.” He poked his fat finger in Stanley’s neck. “What’d you say?”
“너 분명히 뭐라고 했어.” 그는 살찐 손가락으로 스탠리의 목을 쿡 찔렀다. “뭐라고 했냐고?”
A crowd quickly formed around them. “Be cool,” said X-Ray. He put his hand on Stanley’s shoulder.
순식간에 아이들이 주위로 몰려들었다. “진정해.” 엑스레이가 스탠리의 어깨에 손을 얹으며 말했다.
“You don’t want to mess with the Caveman,” he warned. “The Caveman’s cool,” said Armpit.
“원시인이랑 엮여서 좋을 거 없다고.” 그가 경고했다. “원시인은 괜찮은 녀석이야.” 암핏도 거들었다.
여기서 Caveman(원시인)은 캠프 아이들이 스탠리에게 붙여준 별명입니다. 엑스레이와 암핏이 스탠리를 이 별명으로 부르며 감싸주는 모습은 그를 무리의 일원으로 받아들였음을 의미합니다.
“I’m not looking for trouble,” Stanley said. “I’m just tired, that’s all.”
“싸우려는 거 아니야.” 스탠리가 말했다. “그냥 좀 피곤해서 그래.”
The Lump grunted. X-Ray and Armpit led Stanley over to a couch. Squid slid over to make room as Stanley sat down.
덩어리가 툴툴거렸다. 엑스레이와 암핏은 스탠리를 소파로 데려갔다. 스탠리가 앉으려 하자 스퀴드가 옆으로 비켜 자리를 만들어 주었다.
“Did you see the Caveman back there?” X-Ray asked.
“방금 저 원시인 봤냐?” 엑스레이가 물었다.
“The Caveman’s one tough dude,” said Squid, and he lightly punched Stanley’s arm.
“원시인 저 녀석 진짜 거친 놈이라니까.” 스퀴드가 스탠리의 팔을 가볍게 툭 치며 말했다.
Stanley leaned back against the torn vinyl upholstery. Despite his shower, his body still radiated heat.
스탠리는 찢어진 비닐 소파 등에 몸을 기댔다. 샤워를 했는데도 몸에서는 여전히 열기가 뿜어져 나왔다.
“I wasn’t trying to start anything,” he said.
“난 정말 싸울 생각 없었어.” 그가 말했다.
The last thing he wanted to do after killing himself all day on the lake was to get in a fight with a boy called the Caveman.
호수에서 온종일 죽어라 구덩이를 파고 돌아와서 ‘원시인’이라 불리는 아이와 싸우는 것만큼은 정말 피하고 싶은 일이었다.
