Madame Zeroni led Elya around the back of her house where she kept her pigs.

Elya took the tiny piglet, but he didn't see what good it would do him. It wasn't much bigger than a rat.

“He'll grow,” Madame Zeroni assured him. “Do you see that mountain on the edge of the forest?”
“금방 자랄 게다.” 제로니 부인이 장담했다. “저 숲 끝에 있는 산이 보이니?”
“Yes,” said Elya. “On the top of the mountain there is a stream where the water runs uphill.”
“네.” 엘야가 대답했다. “산 정상에는 물이 거꾸로 흐르는 시냇물이 있단다.”
water runs uphill(물이 거꾸로 흐르는 곳)이라는 묘사는 이 이야기가 단순히 사실적인 배경을 넘어, 신비로운 전설의 성격을 띠고 있음을 보여줍니다.
“You must carry the piglet every day to the top of the mountain and let it drink from the stream.
“매일 이 새끼 돼지를 안고 산 정상까지 올라가서 그 시냇물을 마시게 하렴.
As it drinks, you are to sing to him.” She taught Elya a special song to sing to the pig.
물을 마시는 동안 녀석에게 노래를 불러줘야 해.” 그녀는 엘야에게 돼지에게 불러줄 특별한 노래를 가르쳐 주었다.
앞서 나왔던 스탠리의 아버지가 부르던 그 노래가 어떻게 시작되었는지 알 수 있는 대목입니다.
“On the day of Myra's fifteenth birthday, you should carry the pig up the mountain for the last time.
“마이라의 열다섯 번째 생일날, 마지막으로 돼지를 안고 산에 오르거라.
Then take it directly to Myra's father. It will be fatter than any of Igor's pigs.”
그러고는 곧장 마이라의 아버지에게 데려가렴. 이고르의 어떤 돼지보다도 훨씬 더 살쪄 있을 게다.”
“If it is that big and fat,” asked Elya, “how will I be able to carry it up the mountain?”
“돼지가 그렇게 크고 뚱뚱해지면,” 엘야가 물었다. “제가 어떻게 그걸 안고 산을 오를 수 있죠?”
“The piglet is not too heavy for you now, is it?” asked Madame Zeroni. “Of course not,” said Elya.
“지금은 새끼 돼지가 별로 안 무겁지, 그렇지?” 제로니 부인이 물었다. “당연히 안 무겁죠.” 엘야가 말했다.
“Do you think it will be too heavy for you tomorrow?” “No.” “Every day you will carry the pig up the mountain.”
“내일은 무거울 것 같니?” “아니요.” “매일 돼지를 안고 산에 오르는 거야.”
It will get a little bigger, but you will get a little stronger.
“돼지가 조금씩 커질수록, 너도 조금씩 힘이 세질 테니까.”
돼지가 자라는 속도에 맞춰 엘야의 힘도 점진적으로 강해지도록 유도하는, 제로니 부인의 아주 지혜로운 훈련법이라 할 수 있겠군요.
