남자는 그녀보다 머리 하나는 더 컸고, 소장에게 말을 걸 때 그녀의 머리 너머로 앞을 똑바로 내다볼 수 있었다.
“How long have they been in there?” “All night, as you can see by the way we’re dressed.
“이 아이들이 저 안에 얼마나 있었던 겁니까?” “저희 차림을 보시면 아시겠지만 밤새도록 있었어요.”
They snuck into my cabin while I was asleep, and stole my suitcase.
“제가 자는 사이에 제 오두막에 몰래 들어와서 제 여행 가방을 훔쳐 갔거든요.”
I chased after them, and they ran out here and fell into the lizards’ nest.
“제가 뒤쫓아오자 이리로 달려와서는 도마뱀 둥지에 빠져 버린 거예요.”
I don’t know what they were thinking.” “That’s not true!” Stanley said.
“무슨 생각이었는지 모르겠다니까요.” “그건 사실이 아니에요!” 스탠리가 말했다.
“Stanley, as your attorney, I advise you not to say anything,” said the woman, “until you and I have had a chance to talk in private.”
“스탠리, 변호사로서 충고하는데 아무 말도 하지 말아요.” 여자가 말했다. “우리끼리만 따로 이야기할 기회가 생길 때까지는요.”

Stanley wondered why the Warden lied about the suitcase. He wondered who it legally belonged to.
스탠리는 소장이 왜 여행 가방에 대해 거짓말을 하는지 궁금했다. 그는 그것이 법적으로 누구의 소유인지 궁금해졌다.
That was one thing he wanted to ask his lawyer, if she really was his lawyer.
그 여자가 정말 자신의 변호사가 맞다면 꼭 물어보고 싶은 한 가지였다.
“It’s a miracle they’re still alive,” said the tall man. “Yes, it is,” the Warden agreed, with just a trace of disappointment in her voice.
“아이들이 아직 살아 있는 게 기적이군요.” 키 큰 남자가 말했다. “네, 그렇네요.” 소장이 대답했다. 그녀의 목소리에는 실망한 기색이 아주 살짝 서려 있었다.
아이들이 도마뱀에게 물려 죽기만을 기다렸던 소장의 본심이 목소리 끝에서 살짝 묻어 나오고 있군요.
“And they better come out of this alive,” Stanley’s lawyer warned.
“아이들이 살아서 돌아가게 하는 게 좋을 겁니다.” 스탠리의 변호사가 경고했다.
“This wouldn’t have happened if you’d released him to me yesterday.”
“당신이 어제 이 아이를 나에게 인계했다면 이런 일은 없었을 거예요.”
