“I'm not digging any more holes,” said Zero. “They won't make you dig,” Stanley promised.

“They'll probably send you to a hospital, like Barf Bag.” “Barf Bag stepped on a rattlesnake,” said Zero.
“구토 보관함처럼 병원으로 보내줄 거야.” “구토 보관함은 일부러 방울뱀을 밟았잖아.” 제구가 말했다.
Barf Bag(구토 보관함)은 스탠리가 캠프에 오기 전 D조에 있었던 소년입니다. 앞서 그가 병원에 실려 갔다는 이야기가 언급된 적이 있었죠.
Stanley remembered how he'd almost done the same. “I guess he didn't hear the rattle.” “He did it on purpose,” said Zero.
스탠리는 자기도 하마터면 그럴 뻔했던 일을 떠올렸다. “방울 소리를 못 들었나 보지.” “아니, 일부러 그런 거야.” 제구가 말했다.
“You think?” “He took off his shoe and sock first.” Stanley shivered as he tried to imagine it.
“정말?” “먼저 신발이랑 양말부터 벗었거든.” 스탠리는 그 상황을 상상해 보려다 몸서리를 쳤다.
“What's Mar-ya Luh-oh-oo?” asked Zero. “What?” Zero concentrated hard. “Mar ya, Luh oh oo.”
“마-야 루-오-우가 뭐야?” 제구가 물었다. “뭐라고?” 제구가 정신을 바짝 집중하며 다시 말했다. “마-야, 루-오-우.”
아직 글자를 완벽히 깨우치지 못한 제구가 배에 적힌 이름을 소리 나는 대로 읽으려 애쓰고 있습니다.
“I have no idea.” “I'll show you,” said Zero. He crawled back out from under the boat.

Stanley followed. Back outside, he had to shield his eyes from the brightness.
스탠리도 뒤를 따랐다. 밖으로 나오자 눈부신 햇빛 때문에 손으로 눈을 가려야 했다.
Zero walked around to the back of the boat and pointed to the upside-down letters. “Mm-ar-yuh. Luh-oh-oo.”
제구는 배 뒤편으로 걸어가 뒤집힌 글자들을 가리켰다. “음-아-야. 루-오-우.”
Stanley smiled. “Mary Lou. It's the name of the boat.” “Mary Lou,” Zero repeated, studying the letters.
스탠리는 미소를 지었다. “메리 루. 배 이름이야.” “메리 루.” 제구는 글자들을 꼼꼼히 살피며 따라 했다.
“I thought ‘y’ made the ‘yuh’ sound.” “It does,” said Stanley.
“난 ‘y’가 ‘야’ 소리인 줄 알았어.” “그럴 때도 있지.” 스탠리가 말했다.
“But not when it's at the end of a word. Sometimes ‘y’ is a vowel and sometimes it's a consonant.”
“하지만 단어 끝에 올 때는 아니야. ‘y’는 때로는 모음이 되고 때로는 자음이 되거든.”
