“Hey!” Stanley shouted, hoping to scare it back inside. His mouth was very dry, and it was hard to shout very loudly.
“어이!” 스탠리는 그것이 다시 안으로 도망가기를 바라며 소리쳤다. 입안이 너무 말라 있어서 크게 소리 지르기가 힘들었다.
“Hey,” the thing answered weakly. Then a dark hand and an orange sleeve reached up out of the tunnel.
“어이.” 그 정체 모를 것이 힘없이 대답했다. 그러더니 거무스름한 손과 주황색 소매가 터널 밖으로 쑥 올라왔다.
Zero's face looked like a jack-o'-lantern that had been left out too many days past Halloween— half rotten, with sunken eyes and a drooping smile.
제구의 얼굴은 핼러윈이 지나고 너무 오랫동안 방치된 잭오랜턴 같았다. 눈은 푹 꺼지고 입가는 축 늘어진 채 절반쯤 썩어가는 모습이었다.
핼러윈 때 호박 속을 파내어 얼굴 모양을 만드는 jack-o-lantern(잭오랜턴)에 빗대어, 제구의 초췌하고 마른 얼굴을 묘사하고 있습니다. 며칠간의 고생이 고스란히 느껴지는 서글픈 표현이네요.
“Is that water?” he asked. His voice was weak and raspy.
“그거 물이야?” 그가 물었다. 목소리는 힘이 없고 거칠었다.
His lips were so pale they were almost white, and his tongue seemed to flop around uselessly in his mouth as he spoke, as if it kept getting in the way.
입술은 거의 하얗게 보일 정도로 창백했고, 말을 할 때마다 혀가 입안에서 겉돌며 자꾸만 발음을 방해하는 것 같았다.
“It's empty,” said Stanley. He stared at Zero, not quite believing that he was real.
“비었어.” 스탠리가 말했다. 그는 제구가 살아있다는 게 믿기지 않는다는 듯 빤히 쳐다보았다.
“I tried to bring you the whole water truck, but,” he smiled sheepishly, “I drove it into a hole. I can't believe you're...”
“급수차를 통째로 가져오려고 했는데,” 그는 쑥스러운 듯 미소 지었다. “그만 구덩이에 처박아 버렸어. 네가 정말로 살아있다니……”
스탠리가 제구를 구하겠다고 무모하게 트럭을 몰고 왔던 앞선 소동을 쑥스럽게 고백하는 장면입니다.
“Me neither,” said Zero. “C'mon, we got to get back to camp.”
“나도 마찬가지야.” 제구가 말했다. “어서 가자, 캠프로 돌아가야 해.”
Zero shook his head. “I'm not going back.” “You have to. We both have to.”
제구는 고개를 가로저었다. “난 안 돌아가.” “가야만 해. 우리 둘 다 돌아가야 해.”
“You want some sploosh?” Zero asked. “What?” Zero shaded his eyes with his forearm.
“너 스플루시 좀 먹을래?” 제구가 물었다. “뭐라고?” 제구는 팔뚝으로 햇빛을 가리며 눈을 가늘게 떴다.
sploosh(스플루시)는 제구가 발견한 정체 모를 음식에 붙인 이름입니다. 어떤 소리가 연상되는 단어인지 생각해보면 재미있겠네요.
“It's cooler under the boat,” he said. Stanley watched Zero crawl back through his hole.
“배 밑이 더 시원해.” 그가 말했다. 스탠리는 제구가 다시 구멍 속으로 기어 들어가는 것을 지켜보았다.
It was a miracle he was still alive, but Stanley knew he would have to get him back to camp soon, even if he had to carry him.
그가 여전히 살아있다는 것은 기적이었지만, 스탠리는 업어서라도 그를 곧 캠프로 데려가야 한다는 것을 알았다.
