“Why can’t I dig my own hole, but still teach Zero to read?” he asked. “What’s wrong with that?”

“I’ll tell you what’s wrong with that,” the Warden said. “It leads to trouble. Zero almost killed Zigzag.”
“그게 왜 문제인지 내가 말해주마.” 소장이 말했다. “결국 사고가 터지잖니. 제로가 지그재그를 죽일 뻔했어.”
“It causes him stress,” said Mr. Pendanski.
“그게 애한테 스트레스를 주는 겁니다.” 펜단스키 선생님이 거들었다.
“I know you mean well, Stanley, but face it. Zero’s too stupid to learn to read.”
“네 뜻은 알겠다만 스탠리, 현실을 직시하렴. 제로는 글을 배우기엔 너무 멍청해.”
“That’s what makes his blood boil. Not the hot sun.”
“저게 바로 저 아이의 피를 끓게 만드는 겁니다. 뜨거운 태양 때문이 아니고요.”
“I’m not digging another hole,” said Zero.
“전 이제 구덩이 안 팔 거예요.” 제로가 말했다.
Mr. Pendanski handed him the shovel. “Here, take it, Zero. It’s all you’ll ever be good for.”
펜단스키 선생님이 그에게 삽을 건넸다. “자, 이거 받아라, 제로. 어차피 넌 이런 일 말고는 할 줄 아는 게 없으니까.”
Zero took the shovel. Then he swung it like a baseball bat.
제로는 삽을 받아 들었다. 그러고는 야구 배트처럼 삽을 휘둘렀다.
The metal blade smashed across Mr. Pendanski’s face. His knees crumpled beneath him.
쇠로 된 날이 펜단스키 선생님의 얼굴을 강타했다. 그의 무릎이 힘없이 꺾였다.

“I hate digging holes,” he said. Then he slowly backed away.
“전 구덩이 파는 게 정말 싫어요.” 제로가 말했다. 그러고는 천천히 뒷걸음질 쳤다.
