“Tell me what you learned yesterday,” said the Warden. “Surely you can remember that.”
“어제 뭘 배웠는지 말해보렴.” 소장이 말했다. “그 정도는 분명히 기억하고 있겠지.”
Zero said nothing. Mr. Pendanski laughed.
제로는 입을 굳게 다물었다. 펜단스키 선생님이 웃음을 터뜨렸다.
He picked up a shovel and said, “You might as well try to teach this shovel to read! It’s got more brains than Zero.”
그는 삽을 집어 들며 말했다. “차라리 이 삽한테 글을 가르치는 게 낫겠어요! 제로보다는 이 녀석이 머리가 더 좋을 겁니다.”
펜단스키 선생님의 이 독설은 그동안 그가 아이들에게 보여주었던 가식적인 친절함 뒤에 숨겨진 차가운 본심을 여실히 드러내는 장면입니다.
“The ‘at’ sound,” said Zero.
“'at' 소리요.” 제로가 말했다.
“The ‘at’ sound,” repeated the Warden. “Well then, tell me, what does c-a-t spell?”
“'at' 소리라.” 소장이 따라 했다. “그럼 어디 말해봐라, c-a-t를 합치면 무슨 단어가 되지?”
Zero glanced around uneasily. Stanley knew he knew the answer.
제로는 불안한 듯 주위를 쓱 훑어보았다. 스탠리는 제로가 답을 알고 있다는 사실을 확신했다.
Zero just didn’t like answering questions. “Cat,” Zero said. Mr. Pendanski clapped his hands.
제로는 그저 질문에 답하는 것을 싫어할 뿐이었다. “캣(Cat)요.” 제로가 대답했다. 펜단스키 선생님이 손뼉을 쳤다.
“Bravo! Bravo! The boy’s a genius!”
“브라보! 브라보! 이 녀석 천재구만!”
“F-a-t?” asked the Warden.
“f-a-t는?” 소장이 물었다.
Zero thought a moment. Stanley hadn’t taught him the “f” sound yet.
제로는 잠시 생각에 잠겼다. 스탠리는 아직 그에게 ‘f’ 소리를 가르쳐주지 않은 상태였다.
“Eff,” Zero whispered. “Eff-at. Fat.”
“에프(Eff).” 제로가 속삭였다. “에프-앳. 팻(Fat)요.”
“How about h-a-t?” asked the Warden. Stanley hadn’t taught him the “h” sound either.
“h-a-t는 어떠니?” 소장이 물었다. 스탠리는 ‘h’ 소리 역시 아직 가르쳐주지 않았다.
