“Not until you take us to the loot,” said Trout. Linda hit Kate on the back of her legs with the shovel.
“보물이 있는 곳으로 우릴 안내할 때까진 안 돼.” 트라우트가 말했다. 린다는 삽으로 케이트의 다리 뒷부분을 때렸다.
“You’re going to take us to it sooner or later. So you might as well make it sooner.”
“어차피 나중엔 다 말하게 될 거야. 그러니 그냥 지금 당장 불지 그래.”
She walked one way, then the other, until her feet were black and blistered.
그녀는 이쪽저쪽으로 계속 걸었고, 마침내 발은 시꺼멓게 변하고 물집이 잡혔다.
Whenever she stopped, Linda whacked her with the shovel. “I’m losing my patience,” warned Trout.
그녀가 멈출 때마다 린다는 삽으로 그녀를 후려쳤다. “내 인내심에도 한계가 있어.” 트라우트가 경고했다.
She felt the shovel jab into her back, and she fell onto hard dirt. “Get up!” ordered Linda.
그녀는 삽날이 등을 찌르는 것을 느끼며 딱딱한 흙바닥 위로 쓰러졌다. “일어나!” 린다가 명령했다.
Kate struggled to her feet. “We’re being easy on you today,” said Trout.
케이트는 비틀거리며 일어났다. “오늘은 좋게 대해주는 거야.” 트라우트가 말했다.
“It’s just going to keep getting worse and worse for you until you take us to it.”
“우릴 보물한테 데려다주지 않으면 상황은 갈수록 더 끔찍해질 줄 알아.”
“Look out!” shouted Linda. A lizard leaped toward them. Kate could see its big red eyes.
“조심해!” 린다가 비명을 질렀다. 도마뱀 한 마리가 그들을 향해 덮쳐왔다. 케이트는 도마뱀의 커다란 빨간 눈을 볼 수 있었다.
수용소에서 가장 위협적인 존재인 노란 점 도마뱀이 과거의 케이트 발로 앞에도 나타났습니다. 붉은 눈과 노란 점이 특징인 이 도마뱀의 등장은 늘 긴장감을 자아내죠.
Linda tried to hit it with the shovel, and Trout shot at it, but they both missed.
린다는 삽으로 내리치려 했고 트라우트는 총을 쐈지만, 둘 다 빗나가고 말았다.
The lizard landed on Kate’s bare ankle. Its sharp black teeth bit into her leg.
도마뱀이 케이트의 맨발목 위로 내려앉았다. 녀석의 날카로운 검은 이빨이 그녀의 다리를 파고들었다.
Its white tongue lapped up the droplets of blood that leaked out of the wound.
도마뱀의 하얀 혀가 상처에서 흘러나오는 핏방울을 핥았다.
Kate smiled. There was nothing they could do to her anymore.
케이트는 미소 지었다. 이제 그들이 그녀에게 할 수 있는 일은 아무것도 없었다.
독이 퍼진 그녀에게 이제 트라우트 일행의 물리적인 고문이나 협박은 더 이상 아무런 의미가 없게 되었습니다.
