“Okay, so there’s this scientist, and he’s giving a lecture to a huge audience about the history of the earth,
“좋아, 그러니까 어떤 과학자가 수많은 청중 앞에서 지구의 역사에 대해 강연을 하고 있었어.”
and he explains that the earth was formed billions of years ago from a cloud of cosmic dust,
“그는 수십억 년 전 우주 먼지 구름에서 지구가 어떻게 형성되었는지 설명했지.”
and then for a while the earth was very hot, but then it cooled enough for oceans to form.
“한동안 지구는 매우 뜨거웠지만, 이내 바다가 형성될 만큼 충분히 식었다는 이야기도 했고.”
And single-celled life emerged in the oceans, and then over billions of years, life got more abundant and complex,
“바다에서 단세포 생물이 나타났고, 수십억 년에 걸쳐 생명체는 더욱 풍요롭고 복잡해졌다고 말이야.”
until two hundred fifty thousand or so years ago, humans evolved, and we started using more advanced tools,
“그러다 약 25만 년 전에 인류가 진화했고, 우리는 점점 더 진보된 도구들을 사용하기 시작했지.”
and then eventually built spaceships and everything.
“결국에는 우주선까지 만들어내기에 이른 거야.”
“So he gives this whole presentation about the history of earth and life on it,
“그래서 과학자가 지구의 역사와 그 위의 생명체에 대해 강연을 다 마쳤어.”
and then at the end, he asks if there are any questions. An old woman in the back raises her hand,
“그러고는 마지막에 질문 있느냐고 물었지. 그랬더니 맨 뒷줄에 앉아 있던 한 할머니가 손을 들더니,”
and says, ‘That’s all fine and good, Mr. Scientist, but the truth is, the earth is a flat plane resting on the back of a giant turtle.’
“이렇게 말하는 거야. ‘다 좋은 말씀입니다만, 과학자 양반. 사실 지구는 거대한 거북이 등에 업힌 평평한 판이랍니다.’”
“The scientist decides to have a bit of fun with the woman and responds, ‘Well, but if that’s so, what is the giant turtle standing upon?’
“과학자는 할머니를 좀 놀려줄 생각으로 대꾸했어. ‘아, 그렇군요. 하지만 그렇다면 그 거대한 거북이는 무엇 위에 서 있나요?’”
“And the woman says, ‘It is standing upon the shell of another giant turtle.’
“그러자 할머니가 대답했지. ‘그거야 또 다른 거대한 거북이 등껍질 위에 서 있는 거지요.’”
“And now the scientist is frustrated, and he says, ‘Well, then what is that turtle standing upon?’
“이제 과학자는 짜증이 나서 물었어. ‘그럼 그 거북이는 대체 무엇 위에 서 있다는 말입니까?’”
