반 하우텐(Van Houten)은 실제로 19세기 네덜란드에서 코코아 분말 제조법을 혁신하여 현대적인 초콜릿 산업의 기초를 닦은 유명한 가문의 이름입니다. 작가가 실제 역사를 소설 속 인물의 배경으로 활용하고 있군요.
