I nodded, and then Alison My Nurse kind of politely made them leave.

She asked me if I wanted some ice chips, and I nodded, and then she sat at the bed with me and spooned them into my mouth.
그녀는 내게 얼음 조각을 좀 먹겠느냐고 물었고, 내가 고개를 끄덕이자 침대 옆에 앉아 얼음을 내 입에 한 숟가락씩 넣어주었다.
ice chips(부순 얼음)는 수분을 직접 마시기 어려운 환자들의 갈증을 달래주기 위해 병원에서 흔히 제공하곤 합니다.
“So you’ve been gone a couple days,” Alison said. “Hmm, what’d you miss...
“한 며칠 정신없었지?” 앨리슨이 말했다. “음, 그동안 무슨 일이 있었나 보자면...”
A celebrity did drugs. Politicians disagreed. A different celebrity wore a bikini that revealed a bodily imperfection.
“어떤 연예인이 마약을 했고, 정치인들은 서로 싸웠어. 또 다른 연예인은 비키니를 입었는데 몸매에 결점이 드러났다는 기사가 났지.”
A team won a sporting event, but another team lost.” I smiled.
“어떤 팀은 경기에서 이겼고, 다른 팀은 졌고 말이야.” 나는 미소 지었다.
“You can’t go disappearing on everybody like this, Hazel. You miss too much.”
“이렇게 사람들 앞에서 갑자기 사라지면 안 돼, 헤이즐. 놓치는 게 너무 많잖아.”
“More?” I asked, nodding toward the white Styrofoam cup in her hand.
“더 주실래요?” 그녀의 손에 들린 하얀 스티로폼 컵을 가리키며 내가 물었다.
“I shouldn’t,” she said, “but I’m a rebel.” She gave me another plastic spoonful of crushed ice.
“그러면 안 되는데.” 그녀가 말했다. “그래도 난 반항아니까요.” 그녀는 부순 얼음을 플라스틱 숟가락으로 한 번 더 떠주었다.
I mumbled a thank-you. Praise God for good nurses. “Getting tired?” she asked. I nodded.
나는 고맙다고 중얼거렸다. 좋은 간호사를 주신 하나님께 감사할 따름이었다. “졸리니?” 그녀가 물었고 나는 고개를 끄덕였다.
“Sleep for a while,” she said. “I’ll try to run interference and give you a couple hours before somebody comes in to check vitals and the like.”
“잠깐 자렴.” 그녀가 말했다. “누가 와서 혈압 재고 하는 거 방해 좀 해볼게. 두 시간 정도는 푹 잘 수 있게 말이야.”
I said Thanks again. You say thanks a lot in a hospital. I tried to settle into the bed.
나는 다시 한번 고맙다고 했다. 병원에서는 고맙다는 말을 정말 많이 하게 된다. 나는 침대 위로 몸을 뉘었다.
“You’re not gonna ask about your boyfriend?” she asked. “Don’t have one,” I told her.
“남자친구에 대해서는 안 물어보니?” 그녀가 물었다. “남자친구 없는데요.” 내가 대답했다.
